Week beginning August 29th Keith Williams & party.
Another week with the river very low and just showing minus – 1.25 inch at the start of the week and going down further to minus -1.75 on the gauge. The beat was not fished at all.
Week beginning August 22nd Mr Orr Ewing & party
Another week with the river at what seems to be its default setting of around 2 inch on the gauge, by the end of the week it was down to 1 inch. Again nothing to report fishing wise on the beat.
Week beginning August 15th
I managed a brief bit of sport on Tuesday 16th August the river went up to 2ft due to very heavy rain from localised thunderstorms the river rose very quickly and at first was very dirty.
It cleared in late afternoon but was still very coloured i managed to land a 7lb salmon in the McKenzie stream and followed up with a 12lb salmon in the Gledfield run and landed down in Raven pool I briefly played a grilse in the Lairds cast before it threw the hook, the river then dropped away rapidly due to the still very dry ground.
Week beginning August 8th.
Absolutely nothing to report on the fishing front once again the river basically hovered around 2 inch all week.
Week beginning August 1st Stephen Gilchrist & party
Absolutely nothing to report on the fishing front once again the river basically hovered around 2 inch all week, and the beat was only fished on the Monday. People have very short memories I regularly get comments of how dry it is this season, how low the river is etc, all correct of course but last season 2021 was drier and the river was continually running at a lower level than it has been this season most of the time during the dry periods last season seen the river at minus 1 to 2 inch , followed by a four week period from 28th June running continuously at minus – 2.5 inch to -2.75 inch,
followed by a three week period eventually getting to minus -3.5 inch eventually reaching minus – 4 inch on 26th July.
Later that day we had torrential rain giving us a very big river and breaking the dry spell.
Something nice to report is that twice in the last fortnight I have seen a red squirrel in the Cornhill beat, i have seen these lovely little animals in various other places up and down the river particularly down at the Carron bridge. They are migrating downstream so hopefully they will stop in the beat, the two i saw one was on the path at Lairds cast before running up the oak tree at the head of pool, the other on the path above the tail of the Gledfield pool, not the same squirrel as the second one was much paler colour.
