Good bit of sport but very big salmon lost!

I had some good sport on Gledfield beat last week i fished on Monday 4th July  in the late afternoon, Tuesday morning and Thursday till mid afternoon over the period i had one salmon at 7lbs & three grilse at 6lbs, 4lbs, & 3lbs.

Mon 4th. Calum gave me a call to say the river was rising mid afternoon it had went up from approx 6 inch to about 1ft 3 inch when i arrived over in late afternoon it was now showing 1ft 3 inches, the highlight of the week was on the Monday late afternoon when i hooked and played a very big salmon i had it on for just under 20 minutes just minutes after Calum arrived down at the pool it threw the hook. It showed once about 50yards downstream. i have had some big salmon in the past 33lb, 27lb, and 26.5lb, so i did have something to go by i have video clip of the episode I would put it up at about 30lbs.

After his initial run just after i hooked him at Jill’s point  in which he ran about 60yards and leapt but didn’t completely clear the water i could see he was really big, I could not move him at times when he went down deep in the middle  of the Gledfield pool and when he did move with the rod bent well into him i could not move him from his steady course up or downstream. Anyway it was not to be and at the moment it is still a memory it will soon become just a story, i wish it would hurry up and become just a story as i am still thinking about it !!

Tue 5th. The water level today was 1ft2 inch,  Allan Donaldson landed a nice sea liced 7lb salmon in the Gledfield pool it was hooked at Jill’s point the same as the big one yesterday this one today hooked just about four yards further downstream.

Thur 7th. The water level today was 1ft 3 inch, just seeing the odd fish i think they are running through the beat pretty quickly, even so had a god morning i landed a couple of grilse in the March pool at 4lbs & 3lbs and followed up with a nice small summer salmon of 7lbs it was most likely a good grilse but the weight cut off puts it in the book as a salmon, i pulled one other in the Oystercatcher pool.

James England had to go south Thursday night and asked if i would fish Cornhill the last two days. I fished Thursday till mid afternoon and Friday morning over on Cornhill and landed a couple at 4lbs & 3 lbs
